During his studies of natural sciences at the Free University of Berlin, the University of Rochester, New York, and the University of Paris, Tom Sommerlatte also attended classes in arts at the Academy of Fine Arts of Berlin (Prof. Peter Janssen, Prof. Hans Uhlmann) and was in close contact with numerous artists in Berlin, New York, Paris and Brussels. He showed his own artwork in galleries in Berlin, Rochester, New York, and Paris.
Travelling and painting in France, Scandinavia, Italy, Yugoslavia and Greece allowed him to increasingly develop and refine his own artistic expression. After having obtained his PhD at the University of Paris in 1968, he joined the Study Group for Systems Research at Heidelberg, but decided after one year of research on artificial intelligence and knowledge management to deepen his understanding of economics by enrolling at the European Institute for Business Administration, INSEAD, in Fontainebleau, France, where he obtained his Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1970.
He then joined the international management consulting company Arthur D. Little, Inc., in their subsidiary in Brussels as a consultant. In 1973, he was transferred to the newly opened German subsidiary of the company in Wiesbaden. In 1976, he became a member of the European Directorate and in 1983 Managing Director of the company’s operations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In 1991, he was appointed Managing Director of the European management consulting operations, and in 1996 he assumed the chairmanship of the company's worldwide management consulting business. From 1997 through 2008, he has been Chairman and since 2009 Senior Advisor of what is now Arthur D. Little GmbH.
Since 1973, he has been living in Engenhahn near Wiesbaden, Germany, with his French wife Christine and his large family (11 children).
In Wiesbaden, he joined a group of artists, Group 50, with whom he has had a series of exhibitions of his paintings over the years (see Exhibitions). He creates his artwork in his studios in Engenhahn, Germany, and St- Palais-sur-Mer, France.
